Union Street Christmas Lights In 2008

I still remember the 2008 Union Street Christmas Lights switch on that took place on 16 November 08. It was a part of the wonderful Aberdeen Winter Festival. The switch on was led by 13 years old Josh Smith and Lord Provost Peter Stephen. They were in a beautiful carriage that charmed everyone who has decided to visit the Aberdeen events. Josh was waving his magic wand to switch on the Aberdeen Christmas lights as the old vehicle was passing. I could feel the Christmas atmosphere and everyone around me was looking with widely open eyes. Colourful dancers, Portlenthen Pipe Band, the Mall Monster, Army soldiers were part of the amazing carnival parade. The comedy duo Alan McHugh and Jordan Young were performing in Peter Pan. Aberdeen events made all children believe in Christmas and the wonders that come true. It was like a fairytale.

8 POETS (AND I VERY OLD MAN) REMEMBERED IN POETS' CORNER

1.Geoffrey Chaucer
Chaucer's grave in the Abbey provided the nucleus for Poets' Corner but it was not because of his poetry that he was buried there. Ten months before his death in October 1400 Chaucer leased a property in the garden of the Abbey's Lady Chapel and it was almost certainly because he died so close to the Abbey and was a man of consequence beyond his literary work that he was buried in the south transept. It was only in the late sixteenth century when Edmund Spenser was buried close to Chaucer that the concept of a Poets' Corner began.
2.Ben Jonson
Jonson died in a house near the Abbey and was buried upright, standing on his feet, in the northern aisle of the nave. He is supposed to have told the Dean of Westminster that 'six feet long by two feet wide is too much for me: two feet by two feet will do for all I want'. The memorial in Poets' Corner was erected nearly a hundred years after his death but those who wished him to be remembered could not remember how he had usually spelled his name. He appears as 'Johnson' not 'Jonson'.
3.William Shakespeare
Buried in Stratford-on-Avon, Shakespeare has a memorial in Poets' Corner that dates from 1740. He is depicted leaning, slightly awkwardly, on a pile of books with his left hand pointing to a scroll with some lines from The Tempest on it.
4.Lord Byron
According to the Dean of Westminster at the time of Byron's death, the poet's 'open profligacy' was 'an obstacle to his commemoration' and it remained an obstacle until 1969. Even in 1924, the Dean of the day was not sympathetic to an attempt to commemorate the centenary of his death with a memorial in the Abbey, writing with robust morality that 'a man who outraged the laws of our Divine Lord, and whose treatment of women violated the Christian principles of purity and honour, should not be commemorated in Westminster Abbey'.
5.Adam Lindsay Gordon
The only Australian poet to be honoured with a bust in Poets' Corner (one sculpted by the wife of Scott of the Antarctic), Gordon was actually born in the Azores but emigrated to Australia as a young man and all his poetry was written there. He committed suicide in Melbourne, where he is buried, in 1870.
6.Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Tennyson died in 1892 and was laid to rest in the Abbey, between the graves of John Dryden and Robert Browning, after a funeral attended by thousands of mourners. The bust on the pillar nearby was placed there three years later.
7.Thomas Hardy
Hardy died in Dorchester and was cremated there, his ashes then being brought to the Abbey to be buried in Poets' Corner. The story that Hardy's heart, which was removed to be buried separately in the village in which he was born, was stolen by a cat from a biscuit tin on his sister's kitchen table and eaten, is probably apocryphal.
8. Dylan Thomas
Dylan Thomas died in 1953. The campaign to install a memorial to him in Poets' Corner was begun much later after an unlikely admirer, the former US President Jimmy Carter, expressed his surprise that one wasn't already there. The memorial was finally unveiled in 1982.
+1. Thomas Parr
Not all the people buried or commemorated in Poets' Corner were poets. Thomas Parr, who lived through the reigns of ten monarchs, from Edward IV to Charles I, fathered a child out of wedlock at the age of 100 and is said to have lived to be 152, is buried there. Parr lived most of his many years in Shropshire but was brought to London as a curiosity in 1635. The shock was too much for him and he died a few weeks after arriving. Charles I ordered that he should be buried in the Abbey.

The boom of service apartments in London

In the last year it is visible sensitive growth in demand of service apartments in London especially from the side of the different business companies. There is no need to be question the fact that service apartments are offering much more than a single hotel room and is quite preferable accommodation when it come to a longer business stay period. The numbers of initial growths was confirmed by Association of Serviced Apartment Providers and were published for the last third quoter. Not taking in consideration the fact of the increasing popularity of this rent apartment London there still remains few points to be cleared in relation with choosing the right services apartment. We will put more light to some of the essential question reflection of the choice of service apartments.
Duration is usually the first factor that could make you go for or against staying in a service apartments. In case it will be a short business trip for not more than 3-4 days the hotel accommodation might be consider as a better option except your company have corporate housing program involving accommodation apartments with flexible duration.
Suitable location is another very important measure as it should perfectly fits or at least be as close as it can to your business engagements. At this point you can review required time to commute, transport links  and distance between the flat and venue of your business activities.
The rest three very important clues are  amenities, space and cost of the apartment. Both of them are mandatory criterias when it comes to a simple calculation how much exactly you are saving by hiring a service apartment moreover that for staff like wireless internet, laundry etc you should pay extra to a hotel bill. Well equipped apartment with internet access, fully equipped kitchen, laundry drying machine will lower your costs with around 30 %.  Speaking about space we should note that 1 bedroom apartment can be accommodation for around 4 people and 2 bedroom for not more than 6 depending of course of the levels of comfort of each from the people.

5 FILMS WITH LONDON PLACE NAMES IN THE TITLE

1.Limehouse BLues, 1934
This minor piece of 1930s Hollywood hokum plays on the long-held belief that Limehouse, London's first Chinatown, was nothing but a centre of opium-smoking, white slavery and strange, oriental vices. It stars George Raft as a half-Chinese gangster from New York who travels to London and takes over as the local crime boss. Ironically, thirty-four years later, on one of the occasions when George Raft wanted to travel to London in real life, he was banned from entry into Britain because of his Mafia connections.
2.The Arsenal Stadium Mystery, 1939
A friendly match becomes less friendly when the team's star player is murdered and a Scotland Yard detective, played by Leslie Banks, arrives at Highbury to investigate. Members of the championship-winning Arsenal side of the period, most of them looking acutely uncomfortable, appear in the movie. The film has minor cult status and is shown from time to time at the National Film Theatre (NFT).
3.Passport to Pimlico, 1949
The Ealing comedy, about locals declaring independence after discovering an ancient treaty proving that Pimlico is legally a part of Burgundy, not of Britain, has long been considered a classic. Most of the film was not actually shot in Pimlico but south of the river in Lambeth, where the film-makers built sets amid the bomb-damaged surrounds of Hercules Road. (See also 9 Fictional Addresses, p. 215)
4.We Are the Lambeth Boys, 1958
This documentary, directed by Karel Reisz, was part of the 'Free Cinema' movement of the 1950s, a term which was coined by Lindsay Anderson to describe a season of short films shown at the National Film Theatre. Unscripted and made outside the confines of the major studios, several of the films attempted to show everyday life in '50s London. Anderson's own movie, Every Day Except Christmas, was about a day and a night in the life of the old Covent Garden fruit and vegetable market, and Momma Don't Allow was filmed in a London jazz club. We Are the Lambeth Boys was shot over a period of a few weeks in the summer of 1958 at a youth club in Kennington. Morrissey makes use of some dialogue from the film in the lyrics of his song 'Spring-heeled Jim'.
5. Notting HiLL, 1999
Much of the film was shot on location in Notting Hill. The bookshop which William Thacker (Hugh Grant) owns and where he meets the film star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) is in Portobello Road, the couple go to the Coronet Cinema in Notting Hill Gate on their first date and their marriage reception takes place in the Zen Garden of the Hempel Hotel in Craven Hill Gardens. Most famously, the blue door on Thacker's home, which he opens to find photographers camped on his doorstep, was on a house in Westbourne Park Road, then owned by the film's writer and director, Richard Curtis.

It has its own St Paul's Cathedral and its own Blackfriars Bridge, as well as a suburb called Ealing and a market called Covent Garden.
2.London, Ohio, USA
The county seat of Madison County, the town was established in 1810 and given the name by its founding fathers. Its current population is just less than 9000.
3.London, Kentucky, USA
The county seat of Laurel County, it was founded in 1826 and has a population of just less than 6000. Colonel Sanders' original Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant was in Laurel County and London now plays host to an annual World Chicken Festival.

A small settlement in this West African country still bears the name given to it in the nineteenth century, when Britain leased land on its coast to use as bases in the campaign against the slave trade.
5.London, Limpopo Province, South Africa

6.London, Belize
There is a small village in the former colony of British Honduras that was named after the imperial city in the early nineteenth century.

Another small village that takes its name from London.
8.London, Kiritimati (Christmas Island)

He lived in a small settlement he called Paris and named the port on the opposite side of the main entrance to the lagoon Londres, or London. It is now the main settlement on the island.
